We’re making things that don’t need to be cared for. The old aesthetics of wabi and sabi depended on constant care by someone, but we designers cannot govern this someone.
Furthermore, no matter how poor the material, if it’s polished with affection its value will grow. But even though the existence of someone to polish it is important, that very culture is fading. The interaction between human beings and objects has undergone a metamorphosis, and we designers are left trying to reach an unattainable goal.
